Since the moment I began teaching English, I have read and consulted several texts about Didactics, classroom management, ....
Besides, I made a lot of research on different kinds of activities in order to choose the most suitables for the groups I had to teach. And I could find out what now I consider my motto:
“Everybody is able to learn at their own pace and in their own way”. The teacher’s challenge is to discover (and sometimes made students aware of) those ways.
Since not all students learn the same way, I would
like the teaching and learning theory which supports my teaching to be rather
eclectic, then "my" theory is connected to "Social Constructivism"
(the theory which sustains that learning is an active and constructive process
through the iteraction with others), a bit to "Behaviourism"
(although I do not think learners are passive individuals who only respond to
stimuli, sometimes shaping behaviour may be necessary), and a lot to the
"Communicative Language Teaching approach" (because I want the goal of my language teaching to be the
development of communicative competence, since communication represents an
essential and very important human need and makes a major part of our active
life).
Regarding the necessary amount of
exposure to the L2 to include in my classes, I believe that the more English
students hear, the more they will learn. Therefore, we have to talk a lot:
greet in English, recast in English what students say in their mother tongue,
and answer in English. However, this will also depend on how used the learners
are to second language exposure and what teaching strategies will be applied.
If effective and simple instructions supported by modeling, showing, etc. are
given, it may not be necessary to use mother tongue at all.
